Elul Reflections: 10 Elul 5779

An environmental alphabet of woes

We Accelerate – too fast
We Brake - too hard
We Cool our homes too much
We Dry up the rivers
We Emit climate-changing pollution
We Fly further than we need
We Generate power to waste
We Heat our homes instead of dressing more warmly
We Ignore the plight of low-lying islands
We Justify jetting off on distant holidays
We Keep buying things we don’t need or use
We Light rooms even with no one in them
We Make light of the problem
We Never restrain ourselves
We Open our wallets before our hearts
We Prepare food and then throw it out
We Quietly continue in our comfortable ways
We Resist real change
We Subsidise Fossil Fuels
We Tram and Train too rarely
We Underestimate the difference we can make
We Vainly think someone else will solve the problem
We Waste food, water and energy
We eXpress our concern without changing our practice
We Yearn for material wealth
We Zigzag round our responsibility to the earth God gave
