Mission and constitution
The Union for Progressive Judaism exists to honour our tradition, allowing for modern and pluralistic interpretations of Judaism for our communities in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
Our Values:
1. Building Communities: The UPJ helps supports congregations, schools, youth groups and
communities to develop, innovate and collaborate.
2. Equality and inclusivity: We are embracing regardless of ability, gender, sexuality, race.
3. Israel: We are unequivocally Zionist; in that we have a deep commitment to the State of
Israel and its security. We believe that the pursuit of peace is the highest ideal and priority.
We are committed to democracy, human rights, social justice, and religious pluralism for all
its citizens. We celebrate the notion of k’lal Yisrael, the unity of the Jewish people.
4. Social and Environmental: We are committed to social and environmental responsibility
and engage in the ongoing work of tikkun-olam; to strive to improve the world in which we
live.
5. Engaging and inspiring youth and families: We promote community, spiritual growth,
and lifelong friendship, motivating young Jews to embrace Jewish living as a path to
meaning, purpose, and joy.
6. Developing Leaders: We enhance leadership skills among congregational rabbis,
community leaders and Jewish educators. We identify and develop the next generation of
leaders.
7. The voice of Progressive Judaism in our region: The UPJ represents the concerns,
interests, and achievements of the Progressive community in our region through a variety of
state, national and international forums.
