Shatz Course

The UPJ is running a Shaliach-Tzibbur Development program for people who want to learn to lead services in their Progressive community.

What the program covers

Participants will learn to lead Shabbat and festival services, conduct life-cycle ceremonies, and deliver a drash. The course combines practical skills with an understanding of Progressive Jewish liturgy and tradition.

Structure

The program runs as 8 online sessions on Sundays from 4:00–6:00pm AEST:

  • 10 May
  • 17 May
  • 14 June
  • 28 June
  • 12 July
  • 2 August
  • 16 August
  • 30 August

A residential weekend in Melbourne is also proposed for 29–31 May (subject to funding), which includes Shabbat services at a local Progressive congregation.

Assessment is through practical assignments: essays, leading prayers, delivering a drash, and presenting a ceremony.

Requirements

  • Fluency in Siddur Hebrew
  • Ability to attend at least 6 of the 8 online sessions, plus the full residential weekend
  • Comfort with public speaking and video participation
  • Your own copy of Mishkan T’filah

Costs

Participants (or their congregations) cover their own travel and accommodation for the Melbourne weekend. Subsidies may be available for New Zealand and Perth participants who need financial assistance.

Register your interest and we will be in contact to confirm your registration closer to the date.
